Students take the future into their own hands

UH-Maui Community College students are taking the future into their own hands, writing about a greener future. Jon Ellison, Tia Mayberry and Nikki Kinoshita are ABIT, Applied Business and Information Technology seniors working on an online environmental magazine called the GreenMauiGuide.com in their spare time. They describe their guide as the “Lonely Planet” for green living.

“GreenMauiGuide.com is a wonderful and informative resource on how to 'go green'. The site provides helpful hints on everything from how to get the most from the products we buy to how to convert our cars to electricity. This e-magazine is all about saving time, money and our planet!," explains Tia.

The GreenMauiGuide.com is the first online magazine for environmental living on Maui. It is a great place to get news and feature articles about green Maui. The team, with the help of other MCC students, finds new products and practices and shares them with the community. They also write about local people living a green lifestyle in a variety of ways.

“The magazine is a platform for students at MCC to express their feelings and ideas about environmental issues”, points out Larry Burke, Board of Advisor member. The magazine has a news section, a guide with everything from greener footprint to greener giving, the green pages, a free business listing section, and a forum which acts like a blog.

The students are amazed at the need for the GreenMauiGuide.com in the community and beyond, “when we launched the magazine, we were wondering whether anyone would come… as it turned out we had over 1000 visitors the first week from all around the world!” says Jon.

The GreenMauiGuide.com is a weekly e-magazine updated every Sunday.
